Finished Basement Idea – Your Own Home Movie Theater

Looking for something creative to do with all that wasted space in your basement? This finished basement idea will give you a mini movie theater in your own home. Who wouldn’t love that?

It will be a great space to enjoy watching movies together as a family, and dad can claim the room on Football Sunday. Mom can…well, sorry Mom, you might have a hard time wrestling everyone else out of there.

How to implement this finished basement idea:

Okay, get ready. I am giving you permission to go out and buy the biggest flat screen television you can afford. You know, one of those great ones that go up on the wall. Oh, and throw in a new DVD player for those action movies you will want to watch down there.

Seating

You will also need to get something to sit on. Try finding some comfy armchairs that are small enough to place side-by-side, theater style. You can place as many chairs as you want, or as room will allow. I suggest one chair for each family member and maybe a few extra for guests.

Walls

To address your walls in this home theater finished basement idea, you can purchase some thick, discount fabric from any craft store or craft department. All you will have to do for this is measure the fabric and cut it so that it will hang from the floor to the ceiling around the room.

There is no need to put fabric on the wall the television will be on. Make sure to leave enough extra fabric for when you cut it to hem and make a slot for hanging. Scrounge up some strong line to thread the fabric through and hang with hooks. If all else fails, you can simply staple the fabric to the walls at the top.

Flooring

On the floors, some great indoor/outdoor carpet would be great. This is fairly inexpensive, and it is extremely easy to clean. If you can install this carpet yourself, great, if not, get a pro. Some stores will throw in the installation with the price of the carpet.

Now that your floors and walls are addressed for your finished basement idea, hang your television on the wall of your choice. Now, arrange your chairs so that they are facing your television screen. Make sure to leave spacing to get to the chairs.

Concessions

You can add a great popcorn machine, or a microwave somewhere in the room to make popcorn or other movie snacks. A great idea is putting a small dorm-sized refrigerator in your home theater. This way there is easy access to drinks and other snacks and you’ve got your very own concession area.

This finished basement idea is a really cool idea that your family will truly enjoy. This is an effective way to keep your kids occupied, especially on ‘sleep over’ nights. It’s an efficient way to utilize the space in your unused basement, and something you know that your family will love.

The best thing about this finished basement idea is that you get to buy a big screen television. Use these useful tips and ideas to make your home theater finished basement idea a reality.

The Best Movie Theater Foods

Like millions of other Americans I love going to the movie theater. One of the things I look forward to the most is the food available there. Ok, I know it’s not the healthiest in the world, and is vastly overpriced, but it’s good to treat yourself once in a while and it enhances the experience for me.

This is my list of favorite movie food that is available in the theaters. These aren’t in any special order; I just wrote them down as I thought of them.

First up there’s the delicious Nachos. These salty chips and hot cheese compliment my soda perfectly and are very satisfying. The only downside is trying not to make too much noise through the movies.

If you are watching the calories but still want a tasty movie food, I recommend pretzel bites. These first appeared in our theaters in the 1990′s and have remained a firm favorite with movie goers ever since. The small hot pretzel pieces are even more delicious if you dip them in cheese. The low fat content makes them even more appealing.

If you prefer candy to savory snacks, the Sour Patch Kids has long been one of the biggest sellers in our movie theaters. The contrast between sweet and sour is extremely popular, and these small candies are really addictive.

There are a few other candy treats whose success in the movies theaters has never been matched in the stores. The main ones are Junior Mints, Goobers and Sno-caps. Maybe movie goers see them as being synonymous with a trip to the movies and refuse to buy them in a store.

Fountain sodas come in all colors and flavors and everyone has their favorite. One that has recently come to the forefront is the slush ice drink. These have appeared in every movie theater and look as though they’re here to stay.

No list is complete without the original movie food; popcorn. There are so many varieties available today if you fancy something a bit different from the classic variety.

Home Theater Vs The Movie Going Experience – Hands Down the Home Theater Wins!

Besides the incredible feeling of sitting in your own home and enjoying the full cinematic experience of your very own home theater, there could be significant cost savings involved when you have one.

With the advent of new reasonably priced home theater kits and the rising costs of gas and movie theater tickets, the Home Theater just may be a bargain when compared to a regular night out at the movies. Factor in such obligatory add-ons to the night such as, food and drinks while at the movies, the cost of a baby sitter, and maybe dinner before or after the movie and it all of a sudden gets very affordable compared to the cost of a fair sized Home Theater.

Let’s do some simple research to see if it could save you money.

Write out all the expenses associated with a usual night out with your spouse or significant other. Make sure you include costs for all the items mentioned above and any others I haven’t thought of.

Now make it a reasonable time period so you get good feedback for your decision, at least one month but 3 would be better.

Now project how much you would spend in one year by multiplying the results by 12 if you did it for one month, or 4 if you did this for 3 months. That will give you a good idea of how much you spend in a year on movies out.

Research some of the popular kits and components and any other expenses you think would be included if you were to make a room in your house into a home theater.

I bet you would at least break even in a year or two if you go out just once a week to the movies.

But cost isn’t the only factor when comparing going to the movies. How about the added time you will spend at home with your family instead of leaving them with a sitter every week. Then there is the benefit of having your teenaged children staying home at night or on weekends more often.

A theater in your home is a great way to entertain friends and relatives. You could theme get togethers around sporting events ( who doesn’t like to watch sports on a Hi def, big screen) and newly released DVDs.

At holidays everyone could gather around and watch the spectacular parades and events associated with those occasions.

So there is entertainment value along with the savings you will realize from having your very own Home Theater.
